Visa Process
Like Saudi Arabia, you need a sponsor (employer) for a Work Visa and subsequent Residence Permit. Your employer must process this within your first few weeks in the country.
Legal Rights
Qatar has reformed its labor laws, notably dismantling parts of the Kafala system, allowing workers to change jobs and leave the country without employer permission. Minimum wage laws have also been introduced.
Housing
Housing is expensive. Many employers provide accommodation or a housing allowance. Popular expat areas include The Pearl, West Bay, and Al Sadd.
Healthcare
Qatar has excellent public healthcare (Hamad Medical Corporation) accessible via a Health Card for a nominal fee, though many expats use private health insurance provided by their employers.
Culture Shock
Qatar is conservative but slightly more relaxed than Saudi Arabia. Modest dress is expected in public spaces (covering shoulders and knees). Alcohol is restricted to licensed hotel bars and a single distribution center for permit holders.
Financial Planning & Taxes
There is no personal income tax in Qatar, making it highly attractive for savings. Ensure you understand your end-of-service gratuity benefits.
